The Management of the National Lottery Authority (NLA) has carried out the destruction of several illegal mini slot machines confiscated during nationwide enforcement operations aimed at curbing the proliferation of unauthorized gaming devices and preventing under-aged children from engaging in gambling activities across Liberia.
The exercise forms part of the Authority’s ongoing regulatory and enforcement campaign to sanitize the gaming sector and ensure full compliance with national gaming laws and regulations. Over the last two weeks, specialized enforcement teams comprising officers from the Operations Division, Inspectorate Department, and Monitoring & Evaluation Department conducted coordinated raids in several counties across the country. These operations targeted unlicensed gaming premises and mini slot machine centers operating in direct violation of the directives issued by the Authority.
During the enforcement operations, dozens of illegal mini slot machines were seized from unauthorized operators who ignored the temporary shutdown directive and continued their activities unlawfully. The confiscated machines were subsequently destroyed in a public demonstration of the Authority’s zero-tolerance policy against illegal gambling practices and the exploitation of minors within gaming environments.
The crackdown follows growing national concerns over the rapid proliferation of mini slot machines in communities, particularly in densely populated urban areas where reports indicated that minors were frequently accessing and playing the machines, sometimes even during school hours.
The Authority earlier announced a nationwide shutdown of mini slot machine operations as part of efforts to restore regulatory control and protect vulnerable young people from the harmful effects of gambling.
Speaking during the destruction of the confiscated machines at the NLA Headquarters Friday, March 6, 2026, Director General, Hon. Peter L. Solo said the destruction sends a strong warning to all individuals and businesses operating illegal gaming devices across the country. Hon. Solo emphasized that any operator found engaging in unauthorized gaming activities or permitting minors to participate in gambling will face severe administrative sanctions, including license suspension, revocation, heavy fines, and possible prosecution under the laws of the Republic of Liberia.
The NLA’s Director General further noted that while gaming remains a legitimate economic activity that contributes to government revenue and employment, its operation must be conducted within the confines of established regulatory standards.
“Illegal gaming machines undermine the integrity of the gaming sector, deprive the government of lawful revenue, and expose communities especially young people to serious social and economic risks. Hon. Solo disclosed.
He reaffirmed that the NLA will continue to intensify its nationwide monitoring and enforcement activities to ensure that only duly licensed operators conduct responsible gaming activities in Liberia.
Director General Solo also called on parents, community leaders, and local authorities to support ongoing efforts by reporting illegal gaming activities and ensuring that children are protected from gambling environments.
He expressed the National Lottery Authority steadfastness and commitment to promoting responsible gaming, strengthening regulatory oversight, and safeguarding the welfare of Liberian citizens while maintaining a transparent and well-regulated gaming industry.
